A big debate is going on over what is better, grounding sheets or grounding mats. Both are valid options, and what I can share about each method is based entirely on my personal experience. Grounding throws, plush pads, and bands each provide a different experience, but your body weight is used to improve optimal conductivity — and sleeping with a band attached to you is onerous.
This narrows the debate down to mats versus grounding bed sheets. Whether you're on #TeamDurability or cheering for #TeamComfort, grounding is one of the most beneficial lifestyle choices you can make, and you should tell all of your loved ones about it.

Grounding Mats for Sleep: #TeamDurability
Grounding mats are rubber or leather-based products that genuinely work, are extremely durable, and are more affordable than earthing sheets. However, I find them far better suited for a desk or other areas around the home — not for the bed.
My sleeping experience with a grounding mat for sleep was uncomfortable. If you sleep directly on top of it, your skin winds up sticking to the surface. If you try to avoid that by placing it under your sheet, it feels as though you're sleeping on top of a cardboard box. While the mat is an excellent choice for grounding at your desk, workplace, or various areas around the home, the overall feeling of sleeping with the mat is uncomfortable and unnatural.
Grounding Mat Pros: Affordable, durable, usable in multiple locations
Grounding Mat Cons: Bed discomfort
Grounding Bed Sheets: #TeamComfort
Soft, fitted grounding bed sheets are truly comfortable. Period. They are, however, more expensive and may not last as long as mats. How long they last really depends on how well you take care of them — and yourself. They can last anywhere between 1 and 5 years, depending on your level of cleanliness and personal hygiene.
I understand why earthing companies launched the mats. The mat is a business-savvy alternative for people whose lifestyle does not allow the time needed to care for delicate earthing sheets. These sheets require extra care because the silver fibers woven into them are sensitive.
If you don't change your bedsheets often, or don't mind sleeping on them without first showering, then the mats may be a more cost-effective method of earthing. On the other hand, if you are willing to clean the sheets with liquid soap and dry them on a delicate setting, then grounding sheets are the more comfortable and suitable option.
Grounding Sheet Pros: Comfort, full-body contact with the product
Grounding Sheet Cons: Price, care requirements, shorter durability
Grounding Sheets vs Mats: Which Should You Choose?
People who are practical and budget-conscious are likely to choose the mats over the sheets. Those who are fussy sleepers, or simply prefer better quality in life, are more likely to purchase grounding sheets. I would also recommend purchasing a second sheet and an earthing tester to make sure they are still in working condition after some time.
Additionally, after a few washes, you can use them under your regular fitted sheet to extend their lifespan. This is all a matter of personal preference, but my view is that the level of sleeping discomfort with a mat is outweighed by the comfort offered with grounding sheets.
Consider this: if the average night's sleep is eight hours — one-third of a day — then you spend one-third of your entire life asleep. If you live 75 years, that's 25 years asleep, or 9,125 days. That is far too much sleep to compromise by being uncomfortable.
Whether you are seasoned in the world of earthing and grounding, or someone who is just getting started, its benefits vary from person to person. Here, Dr. Laura Koniver's insightful video sheds some light on this topic:
Why Product Quality Matters When Choosing Earthing Sheets or Mats
Whether you've chosen mats or sheets, I try my best to maintain a selection of great quality, durable grounding sheets available on the market. When I first discovered grounding, I ordered a variety of options from Amazon. Due to urgent health concerns within my closest family, I simply wanted to start immediately — and Amazon was the fastest option available.
Within a week, I started grounding. It wasn't until a month later, when my multimeter and earthing tester arrived, that I discovered half of the products didn't fully work. They did not ground. The mats and sheets were conductive around the connector area, but not across the remaining surface. I had ordered several, figuring I'd return what I didn't like or give them to people I cared about. I also wanted to compare delivery times. I simply couldn't wait.
Grounding Success, Community, and Honest Experiences
Beyond the challenge of finding a reliable supplier, I also encountered difficulty among users of faulty products. As I discovered with my own purchases, some individual buyers found they didn't feel much difference between grounding sheets and regular ones. I wondered how many of those people had unknowingly purchased ineffective products and were turned off of earthing and grounding altogether.
It is a shame, but it is a reality in this market. I won't mention specific products or brands by name, as the issues may have been isolated to faulty batches. This is precisely why I test all products myself and return anything of lesser quality. I originally created this website for my friends and loved ones, but quickly began receiving orders from people I had never met.
Furthermore, even among people I know personally, I found that some didn't ground as well as others. This prompted me to do a little more research. Dr. Laura Koniver explains it best here:
People are all different. For my mom's best friend, who passed away earlier this year from cancer, grounding her was just too late. May she rest in peace. When I used the earthing tester on her, the green light would take a millisecond or two before turning on, rather than lighting up instantly. It gave me pause. She was also taking a significant number of painkillers at the time, and before she passed, grounding actually cut her intake of painkillers in half. So it did help — just not in time.
Final Thoughts on Grounding Sheets and Mats
I apologize for the digression, but I felt inspired to contribute to our grounding community by sharing a personal anecdote. As I mentioned, washing the grounding sheets and keeping them in working order is not a big challenge for me. I own two sheets so that I can rotate them, and I have started using them under my own fitted sheets to extend their life.
You could say I am firmly #TeamComfort. What team are you on?
In addition, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the wonderful people out there for their guidance and information. Grounding should be available to everyone. Governments should issue a mat and sheet to every citizen — I genuinely hypothesize that healthcare costs would drop significantly over the years as a result.
Happy grounding!
With love,
Rod Alexander
